Dear FIS TD’s, National TD’s, Officials, Organizing Committees and Coaches,
Happy Holidays to you all!
Please find below statement regarding gate panel use that was thoroughly reviewed and approved by FIS and U.S. Ski & Snowboard. As a reminder, FIS homologated gate panels are required for all FIS and U.S. Ski & Snowboard Giant Slalom, Super G and Downhill competitions.
Gate Panel Statement
Gate panels, and their use and modification in windy conditions, has been a constant discussion over the past couple of seasons. At this time, both FIS and U.S. Ski & Snowboard agree that panels must be used in the fashion they were intended and approved during homologation testing.
The manufacturers and distributors of homologated panels in North America agree that any modification of a panel effectively nullifies the homologation.
Panels should only be used as directed by the manufacturers and their intended use. We need to refrain from “Butterflying”, zip-tying, bungee balling, or any other method to improve air/wind permeability of Giant Slalom, Super G or Downhill panels.
If it’s too windy for the gate/panel to stand tall then it is probably time to put a brief hold on the competition or to cancel if the conditions persist.
Deviations do not conform to the manufacturers', FIS, or U.S. Ski & Snowboard's direction and should be avoided.
Please further distribute this information to those on your regional, divisional and coaches email lists.
Wishing you a wintery and successful new year!
